If you want to experience Shanghai culture, start with ancient town of Zhujiajiao. Zhujiajiao is known as Shanghai’s Venice with ancient houses and buildings attached to the main river. Crossing the river are 36 bridges built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (~1400 CE). Don’t forget to visit Fangsheng Bridge, the tallest and largest bridge in Zhujiajiao. And to gain a better insight into Chinese traditional lifestyle, you can take a walk along the ancient streets filled with historic buildings and pavilions. In addition, souvenir shops in Zhujiajiao offer a variety of exotic and wonderful things to buy for your relatives and friends back home.

Yuyuan Garden is the most famous classical garden in the heart of Shanghai’s Old City. With an abundance of flora, trees, rocks, and ponds, Yuyuan Garden offers a tranquil and pleasant feeling. The garden is a harmonious blend of natural elements and architecture to achieve a perfect balance between yin and yang. Some of the famous scenic spots in the garden are the Great Rockery, Sansui Hall, and the Exquisite Jade Rock.

For history lovers, Shanghai Museum, located in the center of People’s Square, displays a huge collection of ancient Chinese art. The museum has eleven galleries and three exhibition halls with a variety of bronze rituals and weapons, ceramics, paintings, calligraphy, Ming and Qing furniture, etc.

For people who prefer modern architecture, the Bund on the west bank of Huangpu River is the symbolic waterfront area of Shanghai. This area features 26 buildings with a blend of Western and Eastern architecture. Used to function as a flood prevention wall, the Lovers’ Wall on the side of Huangpu River has now become the most romantic spot in Shanghai.

The Oriental Pearl Tower is another famous symbol of Shanghai. Enjoying the status as the world’s sixth, and China’s second tallest, TV and radio tower, the 486-meter tall tower serves as a multifunctional venue with sight-seeing, shopping, museums, restaurants, and theaters.

Nanjing Road, the world’s busiest shopping street, is an ideal spot for shopaholics. The east side of Nanjing Road is packed with tons of small shops selling souvenirs, magazines, T-shirts, etc. But don’t forget to bargain, or you will probably pay more than you needed to. The west side of Nanjing Road offers luxurious and high-class shopping malls carrying famous names such as Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Prada.

Whether it’s a walk along the Huangpu River or an exploration into the Yuyuan Garden, Shanghai leaves an impression of a modern city with historical traces in every step.
